A glimpse inside a joint
So far, we’ve talked a lot about joints. But maybe it’s time we had a closer look at them. Why are they so important and why exactly do we need to keep them healthy? Think of your dog’s joints like shock absorbers. They are in constant use, cushioning his bones to prevent wear and tear. Inevitably, as your dog gets older, he experiences the same wear and tear on his joints as we do. Sadly though, due to a dog’s rapid development from puppy to adult dog, it’s much worse for your furry friend. To help understand what a complex part of your dog’s body these joints are, here’s a brief look at how they work around his bones. No wonder they need some TLC.
What are joints?
The joint is an intricate piece of the body that prevents wear and tear on the bone. It consists of ligament, cartilage and synovial fluid.
Ligaments
These are the “bracing”, holding the joint together to prevent dislocation. Trouble is, they can weaken with age.
Cartilage
Acting like a cushion, the cartilage absorbs impact every time your dog runs and jumps. So it’s easy to see how it can become worn with age.
Synovial Fluid
This is the lubrication to prevent friction. It’s simply a liquid layer between the cartilages but it tends to thicken with age and cause stiffness.
